TCP/IP (Transmission control Protocol/ Internet Protocol) is standart of data communication that is used by internet on data exchange proccessing from computer to the other computer in internet. This protocol always evolving over time, because more and more demand for computer networking and internet.

Architecture of TCP/IP is not based OSI (Open System Interconnection) reference model, however use DARPA reference model (network protocol reference used by TCP/IP protocol). TCP/IP implement layered architecture consisting of four layers. The four layers more familiar with DARPA Model, Internet Model, DoD Model. Every layer is owned by TCP/IP protocol suite associated with each protocol.

The main protocol in TCP/IP protocol as follows:

1. Application Layer Protocol.

Its function is to provide access to application to TCP/IP network services. These protocols includes Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP), Domain Name System (DNS), HyperText Transfer Protocol (HTTP), File Transfer Protocol (FTP), Telnet, Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP), Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), etc.

2. Inter-Host Layer Protocol

Its function is to make communication use connection-oriented or connection-less. These protocols includes Transmission Transfer Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP).

3. Internetwork Layer Protocol

Its functions are to perfom Routing and encapsulation data packets to be IP packets.

4. Network Interface Layer Protcol

Responsible for putting network frames on network media. TCP/IP can work with many transport technologies, start from LAN, MAN, WAN (such as dial-up modem that works on Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN), and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM).
